Symbology & Gemstones
The Symbolism of Candles
Candles have long been a powerful symbol in pagan and religious rituals worldwide. In pagan traditions, candles represent the element of fire, embodying both creation and destruction, warmth and illumination. The flame is seen as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, symbolising the light of knowledge, guidance, and inner transformation. Lighting candles during rituals or ceremonies is believed to invite divine energy, manifest desires, and honor deities.
The Symbolism of Gemstones
Tourmaline
Revered for its protective and healing properties, tourmaline is believed to promote creativity, heart healing, balance, harmony, and grounding. It is often used to absorb negative energies and protect the wearer from harm, a symbol of transformation, spiritual growth, and inner peace.
Ancient Egyptians believed that tourmaline traveled through a rainbow on its way from the Earth's core, absorbing all its colors—hence its wide range of hues.
In the 18th century, people discovered that heating or rubbing tourmaline created an electric charge, attracting dust and small particles (a property known as pyroelectricity). This led some to believe the stone had magical energy that could repel negativity.
In Chinese legend, Empress Dowager Cixi of the Qing Dynasty adored pink tourmaline and believed it brought peace and feminine energy.
Amethyst
Amethyst was historically believed to prevent drunkenness. The name itself comes from the Greek word "amethystos" (ἀμέθυστος), which means "not intoxicated." Ancient Greeks and Romans would carve drinking vessels from amethyst or wear amethyst jewelry while drinking, believing it would keep them sober.
This belief was tied to mythology—one legend tells of the god Dionysus (Bacchus), who, in a fit of rage, tried to punish a mortal but instead turned her into a pure quartz crystal. When he regretted his actions and poured wine over the crystal, it turned purple, creating amethyst.
Revered in pagan, spiritual, and religious traditions, amethyst symbolises clarity, protection, and tranquility. It is believed to enhance spiritual awareness, promote calmness, and protect the wearer from negative energies. Amethyst is also associated with intuitive abilities, helping to open the third eye and promote mental clarity. As a symbol of peace, healing, and divine connection, amethyst is often used in meditation and prayer to bring about emotional and spiritual balance.
